This two-day workshop is the second course in our Solar Electric series and will build upon the introductory concepts presented in 'Solar Electric Design 101'. We will explore, in greater depth, everything involved in PV system design and installation. Academic and hands-on mini labs will be interspersed throughout, giving participants some practical experience working with actual system components. Whether you're just getting started or are already in the business, this workshop will provide an informative and practical educational experience.
Course Goal:
Participants will gain an in-depth knowledge of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems and learn how to determine the feasibility and system size requirements of a PV installation. This workshop will build off the 'Intro to Solar Electric Systems' workshop with greater depth and will incorporate hands-on lab exercises.
Course Objectives:
- Gain a functional understanding of photovoltaic systems
- Understand the roles, significance, and relationships of and between all PV system components
- Further understand: component selection, site analysis, system design, and system sizing by participating in theoretical and hands-on lab exercises
- Understand the importance of energy efficiency when considering renewable energy systems
Course Format:
This is a two-day workshop including lecture, A/V presentations, technology demonstrations, book and hands-on lab exercises, and scheduled breaks.
Lecture/Lab Topics:
- Electricity/PV Review
- In-depth equipment selection and system component interaction
- Component wiring and basic system evaluation
- Basic over-current protection selection and sizing (breakers, fuses)
- In depth site analysis
- In depth system sizing-grid-tied and off-grid
- Installation and component safety
- Energy efficiency analysis/strategies
Course Prerequisite:
'Solar Electric Design 101' or equivalent is required. If you have not taken the 101 course at AltE University, please contact us with information about your previous solar energy education.
What to Bring / Need to Know:
We encourage (but don’t require) you to bring a calculator and a copy of your utility bill as we will review household power usage issues during the class. Although there will be some hands-on lab exercises, you are not required to bring your own tools or equipment. Basic hand tools and safety gear will be provided. Closed-toe shoes are required (no flip flops, open-toed sandals, etc.).
Each student will leave the seminar with a packet of information and a renewed enthusiasm for moving their household or business toward greater sustainability and energy efficiency. Important Information
Class enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, as class size is limited. To reserve a space please pay the entire tuition upon sign-up. Classes are subject to cancellation due to low enrollment, and you will be notified in advance if a class you had previously enrolled in is cancelled.
Cancellation Policy
For cancellation two weeks or more prior to class: If a participant cancels two weeks or more before the class start date, 25% of the tuition is non refundable. The remaining tuition will be reimbursed to class registrant.
For cancellation less than two weeks prior to class: If a participant cancels less than two weeks prior to the start of a class, the participant forfeits 50% of the tuition.

Take Exit 25A onto Hudson Street. Go about a mile to the 2nd set of stop lights and take a left onto Route 85. Take your first right onto Broad Street. Follow Broad Street for about 3/4 of a mile. On the left hand side after you cross a small bridge you should see a large brick building, known as the Hudson Mills Building at 43 Broad Street. Park in the front and take the main lobby elevator to the 4th floor. Our office is on the far Southeast side of the building. Follow the signs to find your way.
